Zebra Mussels discovered in Beaver Lake

Zebra Mussels discovered in Beaver Lake

The first week of May one adult mussel was discovered attached to a shore station being moved in the back of party cove. NE Games & Parks identified it as a zebra mussel and the invasive species program manager came out to inspect and take water samples on May 8. The samples were examined and tested negative. Since mussels need a male & female to reproduce there was a chance it was an isolated adult. Inspection and samples were repeated on May 31. Docks adjacent to the discovered mussel were physically checked with negative results and another water sample was extracted. We were notified on Jun 12 that zebra mussel veligers (baby zebra mussels) were detected in the sample by the NE lab and verified by the state of Montana’s lab. These results indicate we have a breeding population of zebra mussels in the lake. NE Game & Parks collected more samples yesterday (Jun 15, 23.)

Message today from Game & Parks said, “Confirmation of the positive lab sample: Montana lab found what appears to be dreissenid mussel veligers in your sample sent Friday, 6/9 and received today, 6/12 from Beaver Lake.  I’ve attached some preliminary photos of the first veliger found, measuring 133 µm in length. Looks like an early umbonal dreissenid veliger (probably Zebra Mussel.) At least 2 veligers of similar age in this sample. Please let us know if you need any further information.”

We will keep you informed on any updated status. More data will be made available as we receive it. The Lake, Fish, and Habitat committee will run point on this effort and develop a BLA web page to disseminate information. The State Invasive Species Program Manager has agreed to attend a question-and-answer session for the Association. We’ll be scheduling that meeting and will advertise it once set.

Personal Buoy Change Reminder

Please review this reminder concerning personal buoys

This article is to remind you of changes that were made in 2022 to the rules concerning personal marker buoys. These changes were made by the Board of Directors on July 21, 2022 with the approval of DCF 318. The purpose is to standardize all personal buoys on the lake and make them easier to see during the day and after dark. Please take the time prior to the April 1, 2024 deadline to prepare your buoys so they are in compliance. The buoys must meet the following criteria:

  1. Buoys must be removable.
  2. Buoy must be round and a minimum of 18” and up to 24” in diameter.
  3. Buoys must have your lot number on them.
  4. Buoys must be one the following: reflective, have reflective tape visible from all directions, or have a visible solar light.
  5. Buoys must be in compliance starting April 1st, 2024.
  6. Smaller buoys are allowed if they are being used to hold Maui mats or similar swimming platforms – if they are removed daily.

Also, be aware that there will be a $50 fine if buoys are not in compliance by the deadline with a 2-week time period to remove them.  As another reminder, personal buoys are not allowed in the coves behind the Association NO WAKE BUOYS. The Board of Directors and staff appreciate your efforts to make these changes which will make the lake safer for everyone’s use.

Have a great summer!

Troy Weatherby, Managing Director

Tornado Footage from 12-15-21 from Clubhouse Area

Clubhouse 3 (above) shows the clouds rolling in, the water surge, The pavilion sign and fence breaking and the debris. If you look closely while in the tornado you can see everything spinning and debris as well. Then in the end the force of the tail wind pulls trashcans and debris as it leaves.

Clubhouse Beach (above) shows the tornado in the upper left-hand corner. It is distorted but you can see it. It moves very slow and then disappears from the screen. At about that time the lake water starts to change and then the tornado hits the clubhouse area with debris flying and the fence takes off. As it moves from the area you see a squirrel run for its life.

“In Transit” Watercraft

The Board of Directors has agreed upon a process to allow “in transit” watercraft to obtain their Beaver Lake sticker. Below are the guidelines:

  • In Transit Period is 30 days from date of purchase in accordance with Nebraska law.
  • Owner must submit proof of purchase from the dealership or private bill of sale.
  • Owner is required to give a $250 deposit that is non-refundable should the boat not become state registered or the purchase falls through. This is returned when the owner proves they’ve registered it with the state. The deposit is in addition to BLA watercraft sticker fees.
  • Board of Directors must approve each one on a case by case basis.
  • Owner becomes “not in good standing” should they fail to register the vessel through the state within 30 days of purchase and continues to use or maintain the watercraft on Beaver Lake waters and will continue to incur fines.

Please do not go directly to the boat ramp or office if you are obtaining a sticker for “in transit” watercraft. These requests must be approved by the Board of Directors first. To start the request process visit the In Transit Sticker Request page.

Feel free to reach out to Management, Security, or the Board of Directors with any questions.

Warning on using Fertilizer and Deck Stain by the Water

Are you aware that the most common deck stains and lawn fertilizer can be harmful to our lake?  It’s true, most products made for staining a deck or fertilizing your lawn are NOT recommended to be used in a marine environment.  Some products are even toxic to fish and other aquatic species, not to mention our drinking water.  Please make sure to read the label on the product.  Some deck stains will clearly say: “This product is toxic to fish, do not apply directly to water or areas where surface water is present” (Wording is usually located under the Environmental Hazards section of label).   Look for labels that say things like: “The composition is environmentally safe including application over aquatic environments”.   Having lawn fertilizer fall into the lake will also promote/increase weed growth.  When looking at labels for lawn fertilizer, be conscious of the 3 numbers listed on the bag.  The middle number will represent Phosphorus.  A “ZERO” in the middle means the product is Phosphorus free, which is what you want.   Please be conscious of what can accidently be put in our lake.  If you have any questions, please call the Beaver Lake office.
